A New Chapter for Frontierland

Big changes are on the horizon for Magic Kingdom. Disney has officially announced that a brand-new Cars-themed area, Piston Peak National Park, will be added as part of the largest expansion in the park’s history.

This project will take over the space currently home to Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island, and the Liberty Square Riverboat. All of these attractions are due to close permanently on 7 July 2025.

This isn’t just a new attraction; it’s a complete transformation of a key part of the park.

What Is Piston Peak?

Inspired by the fictional national park seen in Planes: Fire & Rescue, Piston Peak will sit alongside Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. The setting draws heavily from Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado. Expect stunning forests, geysers, waterfalls, and rugged peaks.

To help everything blend naturally with its surroundings, Imagineers are using a design approach called Parkitecture. This style, developed by the US National Park Service, focuses on making man-made buildings feel like a part of the landscape.

A Fully Immersive Experience

Visitors can expect to see lodges, ranger stations, trails, and visitor areas. All of these areas will be styled to feel like a fully fleshed-out national park within the Cars universe. Trees and mountain scenery will be used to keep the area hidden from view until guests step inside. Features like geysers will create a visual link to nearby Big Thunder Mountain.

What About the Attractions?

Two new rides are on the way, although details are still limited.

The headline attraction will be a rally-style race through mountain terrain. Early concept art shows four-person vehicles navigating hills, mud, water features, and even geysers. Unlike California’s Radiator Springs Racers, this will be a new experience built specifically for Magic Kingdom.

A Family-Friendly Ride

A second ride aimed at younger visitors is also in development. While details are sketchy, it's not yet clear if this will be a small-scale racing attraction or something entirely different.

Some fans speculate that this could allow Disney to retire Tomorrowland Speedway, shifting the “driving” concept to a better-themed setting.

Does Cars Really Fit in Frontierland?

That’s a big question many park-goers are asking.

At first glance, it seems like a strange fit. However, Disney is embracing the idea of an evolving American storytelling journey. This journey travels from Liberty Square to the North Woods, through New Orleans and the Arizona desert, and now to the Rocky Mountains.

By framing Piston Peak as a national park instead of a fictional town like Radiator Springs, and keeping a strong focus on natural surroundings, Disney aims to make the new area feel like a natural extension of the land. This approach hopes to create an immersive environment that resonates with the park's overall theme.

Don’t Expect to Visit Any Time Soon

Currently, there’s no opening date. Based on how long similar projects have taken, this is likely to be a slow build. Because the Rivers of America needs to be filled and restructured, this project is more complex than most.

Some predictions suggest that 2029 or 2030 are more realistic targets, although nothing is confirmed yet.

A Park in Transition

Piston Peak is just one part of a broader shift at Magic Kingdom. A Villains-themed land is also in development. This area will be complete with new rides, dining, and shopping options. Meanwhile, Big Thunder Mountain is getting a refresh, and Disney Starlight is launching this July, with more updates on the way.

In addition, the park is evolving to enhance the overall visitor experience. Modern attractions and themed areas will transform how guests interact with the park.

There’s plenty to look forward to, even though the road there involves a few goodbyes. Say farewell to Tom Sawyer Island and the Riverboat for now – the next version of Magic Kingdom is already taking shape.
