Do You Need to Hire a Car in Orlando for a Florida Holiday?

One of the most common questions UK visitors ask when planning their trip is simple.

Do we need a car in Orlando?

For some holidays a rental car makes everything easier. For others it can sit in the hotel car park for two weeks while you use resort transport instead.

The answer usually depends on three things:

where you stay, which parks you visit, and how much exploring you plan to do outside the parks.

Do You Need a Car in Orlando if You Stay at Disney?

If you are staying at a Walt Disney World resort, the honest answer for many visitors is no.

Disney has an extensive transport network connecting its parks, hotels and Disney Springs. Buses run constantly between resorts and parks, while the monorail, boats and Skyliner gondolas make moving around the resort fairly easy.

Many UK visitors complete their entire Disney stay without ever needing a car.

That said, some travellers still choose to hire one for flexibility. If you plan to visit places outside Disney property such as Universal Orlando, shopping outlets or restaurants beyond the resort, having a car can make those trips much simpler.

Do You Need a Car in Orlando if You Stay at Universal?

Universal is slightly different.

If you stay at one of the Universal Orlando Resort hotels, you can usually reach the parks by walking, water taxi or shuttle bus. In these cases you may not need a car for park days at all.

However, many UK travellers split their holiday between Disney, Universal and other areas around Orlando. Moving between those areas is far easier with your own transport.

If your trip includes multiple resort areas, a rental car can make the holiday feel far more flexible.

You can read more about the different hotel locations in our article on Best Universal Hotels for UK Travellers.

When Hiring a Car in Orlando Makes Sense

There are several situations where most visitors find a car extremely useful.

Staying off-site

If you are staying in a villa, condo or off-site hotel, having a car is usually essential. Orlando is a spread-out city and public transport options outside the resorts are limited.

Shopping trips

Many UK visitors plan at least one shopping day. Popular stops include the Orlando Premium Outlets, Mall at Millenia and retail trips to Target or Walmart. A car makes these trips much easier.

Exploring beyond the theme parks

Some travellers like to see more of Florida during their trip. Day trips to places such as Kennedy Space Center, Celebration, Winter Park or the Space Coast are all easier when you have your own vehicle.

If you do decide to drive, it is worth understanding how toll roads work around Orlando. We explain this in our guide on Orlando toll roads and how they work for UK visitors.

When You Probably Don’t Need a Car in Orlando

On the other hand, there are plenty of trips where hiring a car is unnecessary.

Many visitors spend their holiday:

• staying entirely on Disney property

• focusing mainly on the theme parks

• using Disney transport or occasional rideshare services

If that sounds like your plan, the cost of car hire, insurance and parking may not be worthwhile.

In those cases, taxis, Uber or Lyft can often cover the occasional off-site trip.

What Most UK Visitors Actually Do

In reality, many UK travellers take a middle-ground approach.

Some hire a car for only part of the trip. For example, they might spend the first week enjoying Disney without a car and then rent one later when visiting Universal, shopping outlets or other attractions.

Others hire a car for the entire holiday but simply use it when needed.

This kind of flexibility works well because Orlando offers many different experiences beyond the parks.

It also ties into another planning question many visitors ask: how many days you actually need in Orlando when balancing Disney, Universal and rest days.

Bottom Line

So, do you need a car in Orlando?

Not always.

If your holiday focuses mainly on Disney or Universal resorts, you can often rely on the transport provided by those resorts.

But if you want to explore more of Orlando, visit multiple attractions, go shopping or stay off-site, having a car can make your trip far easier.

Like many Orlando planning decisions, the right answer depends on how you want your holiday to work.
